Vapor permeable wall paint

"Breathing" walls and thermal insulation

In the case of brick-built houses, it is often heard that the material is "breathable", which ensures a pleasant and healthy internal microclimate of the property. Those who cast their vote in favor of this often do not deal with thermal insulation, which is otherwise a big mistake because too much is spent on heating.

However, is it really important that the walls breathe?

The idea goes back to 1877, according to which the apartment must breathe through the materials of the walls, that is, the indoor air must be exchanged in this way. It is important to know, however, that even breathable building materials cannot ensure that the used, humid air is replaced by fresh air, and that the generated moisture is also drained away, thus preventing condensation and the formation of mold. These tasks are performed by cross-draft ventilation or, if this is not possible, by mechanical ventilation systems.

Dry walls, adequate ventilation

Insulation, which plays an important role in preventing mold growth and high heating bills, does not prevent moisture from drying out of the walls. While in the past there was a lot of doubt about the perfect insulation of windows and doors, nowadays plastic windows provide maximum heat and sound insulation, but at the same time they do not provide enough air exchange. This must therefore be ensured with adequate ventilation and moisture drainage.

Insulate the walls first!

An important piece of advice for home renovators is to insulate the wall first, and only then replace the doors and windows. Although the two systems make a complex contribution to thermal insulation, if the moisture cannot escape through the windows, it will condense on the poorly insulated wall due to the temperature difference and create a hotbed for molds.

Humidity in apartments

In our home, moisture is constantly present in the air. Its quantity varies depending on the activity, and in rooms such as the kitchen or the bathroom, it is worth paying special attention to its drainage. If the humidity inside is constantly high, then it starts to migrate through the walls and construction elements and damages the building structure in the process. As already mentioned, the moisture that has accumulated on the walls is ideal for the establishment of mold, which can then cause serious health problems for the residents.

It would therefore be very foolish to expect the solution only from the breathing of the walls, since it is a proven fact that only one percent of the moisture generated in homes escapes through the walls. It is clear that the walls are not breathable, let alone "breathe", and insulation is also needed to reduce costs.
